Becoming a Language Teacher Trainer

Experienced teachers often appreciate the opportunity to make the step from teacher to trainer, but there are a very limited number of short courses available that can help them to do this. Following requests from past CAT and CSLT trainees for ‘trainer training’, Corinium have developed our own Trainer Training for Language Teachers (TTT) course to help fill this important gap in the teacher education and professional development marketplace.

TTT is an approximately 24-hour long short-course with both theoretical (Part A) and practical (Part B) components, which provides participants with an opportunity to think about their own experiences and apply the knowledge gained to the process of training others.

TTT is therefore based upon developing the educational experiences of trainers in training and encouraging them to reflect on previous and existing practice. Sessions take the form of theoretical input encouraging discussion between participants and course trainers. Group work and practical tasks are included to raise awareness of training program design and the potential impact that this has on trainee teachers and their learners.

Career Progression – From Teacher to Trainer

Course Outline

The TTT qualification is split into two core parts, taking approximately 12 hours each:

During Part A participants become familiar with the concepts that are important when training teachers to teach communicatively in any language. They also become familiar with the theory behind the application of a range of methodologies that are needed at different times in the second language classroom.

Areas covered include the following:

  • Mentoring and trainee support
  • Teacher identity
  • Teaching and learning strategies & styles
  • Classroom interaction and management
  • Training in different contexts
  • Observation and feedback in the classroom

Part B is classroom-based, focusing on specific mini-lessons that teachers prepare according to precise rubrics. Each trainee teaches two lessons and receives peer and tutor feedback – every participant is present for these sessions, as they also assist with understanding the Observation & Feedback process.

Participants receive a certificate once they have completed both Part A (theory) and Part B (practice)

Our Approach

By offering this “eclectic” selection of relevant instruction and personal teaching, CAS trainers are able to prepare ‘trainers in training’ to handle the different contexts their trainer trainees may face in the foreign language teaching classroom. As TTT  can be taught either online or in-person, a key advantage is that it can be delivered in a location that works for participants and, as with CSLT, it has a number of key features:

  1. The course has been developed by Corinium, which specializes in teacher education
  2. Corinium is supported by a number of TESOL and Education-based Associates, with extensive teacher education, research and publishing experience
  3. TTT focuses on linking theory directly to practice

Requirements

This is a postgraduate course, so all applicants must have a degree or equivalent.

Applicants must have at least 2 years of teaching experience.

If you are interested in the course and are unsure if you meet the registration criteria, please contact us

Train the Trainer – FAQs

Online courses are held via a secure Zoom account.

Currently we only offer in-person training to institutions and corporate clients where this has been agreed in advance.

The course takes approximately 24 hours, including theory & practice. Sessions are normally 2 or 4 hours long

This is a bespoke course. Please contact us to arrange a customized training plan.

TTT sessions are led by two highly experienced instructors who have spent many years as teacher trainers.

Part A introduces a range of theories and concepts that link to the skills involved in training teachers. Participants and instructors reflect on their own classroom experiences to increase their understanding of the training process

Part B focuses on mini lessons, where participants teach a prescribed lesson plan and receive feedback from peers and instructors. The aim is to demonstrate elements of the theoretical input in their classroom practice.

Comparisons are limited, but TTT does compare with university-level courses which offer trainer training to language teachers.

TTT is normally taught in English, but the techniques and strategies learned can be applied when training teachers of other second languages.

So far TTT has been taught in English and English/Arabic: other options may be available.

Online courses are held via a secure Zoom account.
